An Indian man wanted for murder in India was arrested Nov. 16 at the Peace Bridge border crossing in Buffalo after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers confirmed his identity during a secondary inspection.

CBP identified the man as 22-year-old Vishat Kumar. Officers took him into custody after Canadian authorities denied him entry and returned him to the United States. CBP said Kumar had illegally entered the country in 2024 and later failed to appear for an asylum interview.

During the inspection, officers determined he was concealing his identity. Officials said biometric technology confirmed he had used a false name and date of birth. The check also showed an active Interpol Red Notice issued by Indian authorities for a murder charge.

Acting Area Port Director Sharon Swiatek said the case underscores the agency’s work with global law enforcement. She said, “The apprehension of this individual demonstrates the critical role our officers play in safeguarding our nation and working collaboratively with international partners to uphold justice.” She added that the arrest reflects the agency’s commitment to identifying people who “attempt to evade accountability for serious crimes.”

CBP processed Kumar and transferred him to Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations. He is being held at the Federal Detention Facility in Batavia, New York, while removal proceedings move forward.
