Indian American Impact called for a full investigation and accountability from the Department of Homeland Security after a woman was killed during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Minneapolis.

Calling the incident an unacceptable use of force during a federal immigration enforcement action, Indian American Impact said it highlights the “grave and growing danger posed by unchecked ICE operations and the devastating consequences for immigrant families and all Americans nationwide.”

As the shooting took place during a federal enforcement operation, the organization said it raised serious concerns about the conduct of law enforcement agencies under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

“Federal law enforcement operations should protect communities—not terrorize them,” it said, adding that under the Trump administration, communities have been living in “constant fear” as ICE and DHS carry out what it described as increasingly aggressive and violent operations.

The group said such actions erode civil rights, undermine human dignity, and destabilize entire communities. It urged Congress to intervene, calling on lawmakers to demand a full, independent investigation into the shooting and to require complete transparency and accountability from DHS.

“Our communities are grieving, angry, and shaken,” the group said, calling on people to stand together and “transform this pain into peaceful civic action.”

The woman, identified by family members and local officials as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, was shot and killed Jan. 7 morning in south Minneapolis near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue. She was not the subject of an immigration arrest at the time of the encounter, according to local officials.

Federal authorities have said the ICE officer fired in self-defense, alleging that Good attempted to run over officers with her vehicle. Minnesota officials, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have disputed that account, saying video reviewed by the city does not support the federal version of events.

The shooting has triggered protests and vigils in Minneapolis and renewed scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement practices and the use of force by ICE agents.
