IAGB to host monthlong India Independence Day events
Events across Greater Boston include flag raisings, cultural programs, cricket tournament and student scholarship presentations in August.

The India Association of Greater Boston announced a monthlong lineup of events across Greater Boston to mark India's 79th Independence Day, with celebrations scheduled throughout August. The nonprofit organization will host flag-raising ceremonies, cultural programs, a cricket tournament and scholarship presentations in partnership with local communities.
The celebrations will begin with a series of flag-raising ceremonies starting Aug. 1. The organization said the events will be held in Westford, Burlington, Acton, Sharon and Andover in collaboration with local towns. According to IAGB, 'Raghuram S., Consul General of India, Boston,' will serve as chief guest, while 'Anu Chitrapu, Senior Vice President & Technology Executive, Bank of America,' will attend as guest of honor. The organization said the dignitaries will participate in select ceremonies alongside community leaders, elected officials and families.
The first ceremonies are scheduled for Aug. 1 at Westford Town Common from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and Burlington Town Common from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Additional events are planned for Aug. 15 at NARA Park Amphitheater in Acton, Aug. 16 at Sharon Community Center and Aug. 22 at Chinmaya Mission Boston in Andover.
IAGB's main India Day celebration, themed "Colors of India," will take place Aug. 15 from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at NARA Park Amphitheater in Acton. The program will feature more than 20 cultural performances by local artists and dance schools, an interactive flash mob and dance-along led by Swasti Bhargava, a DJ finale by Xtreme Productions, more than 25 community booths and family activities, and raffle and trivia games.
The organization also announced its first Tennis Ball Cricket Tournament, scheduled for the morning of Aug. 15 at NARA Park Amphitheater and Macpherson Field in Acton. The tournament will include awards for champion, runner-up, best batter and best bowler. IAGB said all participants will receive a free T-shirt.
During the India Day celebration, IAGB will also present its 2026 Senior Scholarship Awards, supported by The Kapasi Family Foundation. Two scholarships of $500 each, one for a male student and one for a female student, will be awarded to graduating high school seniors entering college in fall 2026. Applicants submitted essays on the theme, "Colors of India – Stories That Inspire."
Founded in 1962, IAGB is a nonprofit organization that promotes Indian culture, community engagement and U.S.-India relations. The organization said its August programming is intended to bring together residents through cultural events, sports, youth initiatives and civic partnerships across Greater Boston.
