The state of Delaware has officially recognized June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, with Governor Matthew Meyer issuing a proclamation encouraging residents to embrace the practice for a healthier lifestyle.

In the proclamation, Meyer described yoga as a 5,000-year-old tradition originating in India that promotes harmony between the mind, body, and spirit. He noted that yoga supports physical strength, flexibility, mental clarity, and emotional well-being, while also serving as a valuable tool for stress management and community health.

“Now, Therefore, I, Matthew Meyer, Governor, do hereby proclaim June 21, 2026, as International Day of Yoga in the State of Delaware, and encourage all residents to explore this practice for a healthier lifestyle,” the proclamation stated.

The proclamation also recognized the efforts of the Indian American community in Delaware, which organized local celebrations in association with the Consulate General of India in New York. The events aimed to promote wellness, peace, and unity while bringing communities together through yoga.

The Consulate welcomed the proclamation and thanked Meyer for the recognition.

“This gracious recognition reaffirms the growing resonance of yoga as a shared pathway to health, harmony and holistic well-being,” the Consulate said in a statement.

The recognition comes as International Day of Yoga was observed across the United States and around the world on June 21.

In New York, yoga expert H.R. Nagendra led a large-scale yoga session at Times Square during celebrations organized by the Consulate General of India. The annual event drew participants from diverse backgrounds to mark the occasion at one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.

The United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in December 2014 following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 69th session of the UN General Assembly. The resolution received support from 175 member states, one of the highest levels of co-sponsorship for a UN resolution.

Since 2015, the day has been observed annually across the world through yoga sessions, community events, and public awareness initiatives promoting physical and mental well-being.
