California State Assembly member Darshana Patel has been appointed chair of the California State Assembly Education Committee.
The committee oversees transitional kindergarten through grade 12 education policy affecting nearly six million students in California’s public school system, the largest in the United States.

Patel takes charge of the committee as lawmakers continue to address challenges affecting schools, educators and families across the state.
“California’s students deserve a legislature that approaches education policy the same way a scientist approaches a problem: with rigor, humility, and an unrelenting focus on what the evidence says actually works,” Patel said in a statement.
“The decisions the Assembly Education Committee makes will shape the future of millions of children, our workforce, and our state. I am honored that Speaker Rivas has entrusted me with this role, and I take this responsibility extremely seriously,” she added.
California Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas said Patel’s experience in education policy and public service makes her well suited to lead the committee.
“Assemblymember Dr. Darshana Patel represents precisely the caliber of leadership California’s students need and deserve,” Rivas said. “Her longstanding commitment to public service, and depth of expertise in education, positions her to continue to strengthen our classrooms.”
In addition to chairing the Education Committee, Patel serves on several legislative panels, including the committees on Economic Development, Growth and Household Impact, Health, Higher Education, and the Budget Committee, as well as the Assembly Budget Subcommittee No. 3 on Education Finance.
