California Assemblymember Dr. Darshana R. Patel, who represents the 76th Assembly District in northern San Diego County, will headline a fireside chat on July 19 as part of Hindu YUVA's four-part "Dharma & America250" series exploring the relationship between Hindu values and American identity, according to a post on X by the organization.

The session, titled "The Individual," will be streamed live on Facebook and YouTube, according to the post. It is the first installment in the series being organized in connection with the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Patel was elected in November 2024 to represent California's 76th Assembly District, which includes Escondido, San Marcos and parts of San Diego, according to her official legislative biography. She previously served as president of the Poway Unified School District Board of Education and the San Diego County School Boards Association, and also served on the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs, according to her biography. She currently chairs the California State Assembly's Education Committee.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Gujarati immigrant parents, Patel holds a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Occidental College and a doctorate in biophysics from the University of California, Irvine. Before entering public service, she worked in biotechnology and oncology research, including at Genentech, according to her official biography. Patel is also recognized as the first Hindu woman elected to the California State Legislature.
According to the website, Hindu YUVA is a North America-based organization that seeks to preserve, practice, promote and protect Hindu Dharma by engaging Hindu youth on college campuses. The organization says it focuses on leadership development, personality development and community service through educational and cultural programming.
The fireside chat is being promoted in partnership with America250, the national initiative commemorating the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, according to the event graphic shared by Hindu YUVA. The series will explore how the principles of dharma relate to individual responsibility, civic engagement and American society through conversations with public figures and community leaders.
