Indian-origin entrepreneur Sakshi Sharma Vaidya went viral after posting a video of herself wearing a saree while Christmas shopping at a U.S. mall, saying she wore it because a saree is culture, not a costume.

In her video, Vaidya is seen wearing a bright blue saree that she designed herself, walking through the mall and looking at different items on display, while people around her turned heads, and some gave her compliments.

She posted the video with the caption,

“Wore a saree to a mall for Christmas shopping. Wore it because I felt like it. Thoughts?”

Vaidya also candidly explained her decision to wear a saree in the video, and said,

“Oops, I did it again! This time I wore a saree to a mall for Christmas shopping. I got some head turns, some confused looks, and lots of compliments. I did not wear a saree to stand out. I wore it because culture is not a costume. It's a choice.”

“Clothing is a way to express myself, and I wear what I feel like,” she added.

Most people online hailed her choice and showered compliments. One comment read,

“Now this is the Christmas Vibe we need. Lovely”

“You look amazing in that saree. It looks so elegant!” read another.

However, there came some negative comments that claimed Vaidya wore a saree to stand out and was looking for attention.

“But you had someone following you around videotaping you. And you weren’t looking for attention,” one user wrote.

Another comment read,

“Yes you did wear a saree to stand out, nothing wrong in doing that, but just accept it.”

Vaidya also recently addressed such comments and posted a story that read,

“Comment section is BLOWING UP on this one. My life, my choices. I went to an Indian event this weekend & had to stop by to buy Christmas gifts. Ahhh people! #sareenotsorry”

Vaidya’s posts on Instagram mostly include capturing her life with her family and her work, along with some content on fitness, fashion, and health recipes.
