The city of Brampton proclaimed May 1 as Gujarat and Maharashtra Day on April 22, formally recognizing the contributions of Gujarati and Maharashtrian communities in the Canadian city.
The proclamation, issued on behalf of Brampton City Council, designates May 1, 2026, as “Gujarat and Maharashtra Day” in the city. The recognition highlights the presence of more than 80,000 Gujaratis and Maharashtrians living in Brampton and acknowledges their role in shaping the city’s cultural and social landscape.

According to the proclamation, the observance celebrates a community “whose culture, traditions and contributions continue to shape our city.” The statement notes that Gujarati and Maharashtrian residents have had an impact across multiple areas of civic life.
