Himesh Patel to lead in ‘X-Files’ reboot

Patel will co-lead alongside American actress Danielle Deadwyler in the upcoming Hulu project.

British actor Himesh Patel has been roped in for the upcoming reboot of the X-Files, a reimagining of the iconic sci-fi series.

Yesterday and EastEnders fame, Patel, is set to star opposite American actress Danielle Deadwyler in the upcoming Hulu project. Joining the team after Deadwyler, Patel's arrival completes casting for the central duo.

Patel and Deadwyler have previously worked together in the HBO Max miniseries 'Station Eleven', with Patel earning an Emmy nomination for his leading role in the series.

Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, the story will follow the escapades of an unlikely duo of FBI agents, assigned to a long-dormant division handling cases involving unexplained phenomena, retaining the themes of mystery and the supernatural, according to Variety.

The official longline of the reboot reading, "Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena."

Currently in the early pilot stage, the creators noted that both Patel and Deadwyler are playing new characters and not rehashing the roles of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

The 1993 original, which aired on Fox, ran for nine seasons and even made room for two movies. With Gillian Anderson playing Agent Dana Scully, who is tasked with debunking Agent Fox Mulder’s, played by David Duchovny, paranormal claims.

35-year-old Patel, with a Gujarati descent, was born in Sawtry, Cambridgeshire. He began his career portraying Tamwar Masood in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. This was followed by roles in the Channel 4 sitcom Damned and the films Yesterday and Tenet .

In 2021, Patel starred in the HBO miniseries Station Eleven, earning a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, and appeared in Adam McKay's Netflix film Don't Look Up.

The X-Files will be produced by Onyx Collective and 20th Television. Jennifer Yale will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler of Proximity Media will also executive produce along with original “X-Files” creator Chris Carter. Simone Harris of Proximity Media will co-executive produce, as will Deadwyler and Patel.
