US Rep. Mike Thompson honors victims of Oak Creek gurdwara shooting

U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson paid tribute on Aug. 5 to the victims of the 2012 Oak Creek, Wisconsin, gurdwara shooting, marking 14 years since the deadliest targeted attack against Sikh Americans in United States history.
In a statement posted on X, Rep. Thompson called on American lawmakers and communities to honor the victims, stand up against hate and strengthen efforts to curb gun violence.
“Fourteen years ago today, a Sikh house of worship in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, was violently attacked in a mass shooting. Seven people died and four more were injured in the worst incident of anti-Sikh violence in our nation's history. Today, we remember the lives of those lost, recommit to standing up to hate and continue to work to make our communities safe from gun violence,” he said.

On Aug. 5, 2012, a white supremacist gunman stormed the Gurdwara of Wisconsin in Oak Creek as congregants gathered ahead of Sunday services and langar (communal meal), fatally shooting six congregants before killing himself. He wounded four others, one of whom died in March 2020 from injuries sustained in the shooting. The U.S. Justice Department declared the mass shooting both a hate crime and a terrorist act.
