Congressman Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10) recognized several banks and credit unions for providing financial support to federal workers, contractors, military personnel, and small businesses affected by the current government shutdown on Oct. 27.
The acknowledgment came as millions of federal employees received their first missed full paycheck this week amid the funding lapse.
Subramanyam noted that institutions offering interest-free loans, waived late fees, and other hardship assistance have significantly helped unpaid workers and their families.

“I commend every bank, credit union, and financial institution that understands how shutdowns impact our community and is offering relief when we need it the most. I urge them to continue these efforts for the duration of this shutdown,” Subrahmanyam said.
“This shutdown is putting countless Virginians in financial distress, from federal workers and contractors struggling to pay rent and cover expenses to small businesses losing the traffic they need to stay afloat through no fault of their own,” he added.
Representing Virginia’s 10th congressional district, Subramanyam serves over 36,000 federal employees and thousands of contractors. Since the shutdown began, he has supported multiple bills aimed at reducing the financial strain on those affected.
These include the Shutdown Guidance for Financial Institutions Act, which encourages flexible practices by banks, credit unions, and lenders to aid affected individuals, and the Emergency Relief for Federal Contractors Act, which would allow penalty-free retirement account withdrawals for impacted contractors.
Subramanyam affirmed he will continue backing financial institutions that extend aid to federal workers, contractors, and local businesses throughout the shutdown.
