Indian American Ami Bera (D-CA) joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers urging President Donald Trump to personally attend major Indo-Pacific summits taking place later this year, highlighting the region’s central role in U.S. security and prosperity.
The lawmakers—led by Rep. Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee—sent a letter to President Trump on Oct. 16 calling for his attendance at the East Asia Summit (EAS) in Malaysia, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in South Korea, and a Quad Leaders’ Summit in India.

“The Indo-Pacific is vital to America’s security and prosperity and remains at the center of our strategic competition with the People’s Republic of China,” the lawmakers wrote. “Your participation in these summits would be a powerful response to Xi’s diplomatic campaign, reassuring allies and reaffirming America’s leadership in the region.”
Bera, who has long advocated for sustained U.S. engagement in Asia, underscored that high-level American presence is critical to counter Beijing’s growing assertiveness and maintain the stability of a free and open Indo-Pacific.
The bipartisan letter comes amid heightened U.S.–China tensions across the Indo-Pacific. In recent months, Beijing has expanded its military footprint and economic leverage from the South China Sea to the Taiwan Strait.
The letter was signed by Rep. Young Kim (R-CA), Chairwoman of the East Asia and Pacific Subcommittee; Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-MI), Chairman of the South and Central Asia Subcommittee; and Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA), Ranking Member of the South and Central Asia Subcommittee.
As of now, the White House has not confirmed whether President Trump will attend all three summits. The lawmakers urged him to “announce [his] decision as soon as possible,” warning that absence at these high-profile meetings could send the wrong signal to allies in Asia.
