Rakhi Israni / Handout
Washington: For Rakhi Israni Singh, who is running for Congress from California’s 14th Congressional District, education and mental health, especially for the youth, lies at the heart of her campaign. Shaped by what she described as years of working closely with children and families, as a lawyer and educator, Israni said that the challenges currently faced by the youth especially in dealing with mental health, are unlike anything seen before.
“We are at a time when there is so much disruption all around us and the young people are definitely affected by this. This is one of the things I feel most passionate about as we need to work towards helping the younger generation,” Israni, a mother of four teenagers said.
Israni, a non-profit lawyer, is also the founder of an education company which has a nationwide presence.
Stating that she’s worked with children all her life, Israni said that the current situation also pushed her to be a part of the decision-making process so that she can make a tangible difference.
Arguing for increased federal funding for school-based counselors, Israni said, “Currently, we’re asking schools to do more with a lot less.”
Israni also advocated for stronger enforcement of mental health parity laws, so insurers treat behavioral health on par with physical health. She also called for greater accountability from social media platforms, which she believes are “profiting from harm to children.”
Beyond student well-being, Israni pointed to the rapid rise of artificial intelligence as an impending disruption to the workforce, particularly in a district located at the center of technological transformation.
A resident of the East Bay area for over two decades, Israni said that the federal government must invest in retraining programs and create pathways into fields where AI is less likely to replace, such as skilled trades, healthcare, and construction.
“We need to prepare our kids and our community for what’s coming,” she said.
Israni reiterated that if elected to Congress, she intends to tackle affordability issues faced by her constituents, with housing being at the center of it.
Israni described homeownership as a foundational step toward stability and long-term wealth creation. “The second you put someone in a home, you create a sense of stability that can be a game changer for them and future generations,” she said, calling for policies that help first-time buyers enter the housing market.
According to Israni, her third priority focused on what she called “removing complacency” from governance. Israni supported term limits for members of Congress and a ban on stock trading by lawmakers and their families to prevent conflicts of interest.
Together, Israni said, these priorities including, education, affordability, and governance reform, address both immediate local concerns and longer-term structural challenges facing families in the district.
While the special elections to replace former Congressman Eric Salwell, are scheduled to be on August 18, the Democratic primaries are set to be held on June 16. The primary for the permanent seat will be held on June 2.
