American actor and film producer Leonardo DiCaprio has revealed in an interview that his stepmother, Peggy DiCaprio, is a follower of Sikhism and lives as an Amrithdhari Sikh.

The Oscar winner was born to George DiCaprio, a comic artist connected to California's counterculture scene, and Irmelin Indenbirken. His parents separated when he was just a year old.

George married Peggy Ann Farrar in 1995, becoming DiCaprio’s stepmother and the mother of his stepbrother, Adam Ferrar.

Several reports suggested that DiCaprio’s stepmother, Peggy, is an Amritdhari Sikh and is often spotted wearing a turban and traditional Indian attire.

Peggy reportedly embraced Sikhism years ago and later adopted the turban as part of her faith.

Speaking about his upbringing, parents, and their cultural influences, DiCaprio said,

“My stepmother is a Sikh. My father is from the sort of hippie counterculture and grew up in San Fran in Los Angeles. He hung out with a lot of the underground art movement in the Los Angeles of the 70s."

DiCaprio’s revelation about his Sikh connection has received wholesome responses from the Sikh and Indian communities.

Indian singer Mika Singh posted about it on X, calling it a proud moment for the Sikhs and Indians.

DiCaprio also recalled an amusing incident from the sets of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” when his co-star Brad Pitt was surprised by his father’s and stepmother’s appearance.

DiCaprio amusingly mentioned that Pitt initially thought his parents were part of the film’s background cast before realising that this was their usual way of dressing up on regular days.

According to the IMDb biography of DiCaprio’s stepbrother, Adam Farrar, his parents were devotees of the late Yogi Bhajan, an American entrepreneur and yoga guru.
