An American woman living in India has stirred a wide discussion on social media after sharing why she finds life in India more affordable than in the United States.

Kristen Fischer, who documents her life in India on Instagram, said she chose to move because her money “goes much farther” in the country, allowing her to live more comfortably despite earning less.

“Sure people can earn more in America, but they also have to spend more. And for many things, the cost of things is far higher proportionally in the USA than they are in India. So even with less money I can still live a more comfortable life in India than I can in the USA. Money goes much farther here so it just makes sense to me,” she said.

In a video shared with her post, Fischer compared the prices of common services between the two countries.

According to her, a haircut in the U.S. costs between $15 and $50, while in India it ranges from $1.20 to $2.50. Wi-Fi in the U.S. costs about $80 a month, compared to roughly $8 in India. Movie tickets, which cost $12 to $16 in America, are priced between $2.50 and $5 in India.

Doctor consultations in the U.S. range from $150 to $600, while in India they cost about $7 to $17. She also said mobile phone plans cost around $50 to $70 per month in the U.S., whereas the same service in India is available for just $3 to $5.

“There are so many more examples of things that are far more affordable in India than they are in the USA,” Fischer noted. “Even though we are making less money living here in India, we can live far better on the money that we do make.”

Her post has drawn strong reactions on social media, with many users agreeing with her observations. One comment read, “Welcome!! The food in restaurants is also cheaper. Public transport is also cheaper in India when compared to America.”

Another user wrote, “I totally get your love of India. What a magical place with the most amazing people, food, history, and culture. I really enjoy hearing your insight about life in India.”

Fischer, who has been residing in India for some time, has previously sparked debate for her videos on various aspects of life in India.
