A modest rise in public confidence and stricter visa checks are reshaping higher education, University of Houston president Renu Khator said in her Oct. 8 State of the University address. She told faculty and staff not to be discouraged by headlines about falling trust in universities and the added scrutiny on international students.
“As disheartening as this information is, it is also, in part, a reflection of the overall distrust in institutions,” she said, noting Gallup’s last year's survey shows higher education dipped to an all time low. But, she added that there is a positive sign this year. Higher education was also the only U.S. institution to gain trust in the June 2025 survey as opposed to last year's dip.
