HinduAction will host a “Meet and Greet Luncheon” on May 23 in Houston focused on “Importance of Dharmic Advocacy in American Democracy,” according to an event announcement released by the organization.

The event is scheduled at the Houston Food Bank Conference Center, located at 535 Portwall Street in Houston. Paramita “Paro” Sarkar will serve as host, while Utsav Chakrabarti, executive director of HinduAction, is listed as the presenter.

HinduAction describes itself as an organization focused on education, advocacy and leadership. The group said its vision is to promote “pluralistic societies through Education, Advocacy and Leadership.”

According to the organization, its mission includes strengthening “American pluralism through community outreach and education” by using STEM, meditation and yoga initiatives. The organization also said it seeks to contribute to discussions on civil liberties, public safety and religious freedom through perspectives rooted in Hindu civilizational experience.

The group said it also works to provide “input on Hindu ethos to elected officials and corporations” in the development of inclusive policy frameworks. Additional goals outlined by the organization include encouraging culturally accurate portrayals of Hindus and Dharmic communities in media and entertainment and engaging stakeholders on advocacy campaigns.

Chakrabarti, an architect by profession, has represented “the case of Hindu and indigenous communities to thought-leaders in Washington DC for more than 18 years,” according to the organization’s description of its leadership team.

The organization said Chakrabarti’s work has been presented to lawmakers on Capitol Hill and representatives of the Human Rights Commission. HinduAction also described him as an observer of political and social trends in Washington whose perspective is informed by architecture, nation-building and civilizational history.

Renu Gupta, chairwoman of the board of directors, is identified by the organization as a published Hindi writer, business owner and community organizer. HinduAction said Gupta received the ‘She The Change – Nari Udhyami Sanman 2019’ award in India for her work supporting communities in India and the United States.

Anjalee Swamy, a member of the board of directors, is described by the organization as a software engineer, product manager and advocate for underrepresented Dharmic and ethnic faith-based communities.

Sarkar, also a board member, began her journey in the United States as a graduate student in pharmaceutical sciences, according to the organization. HinduAction said her advocacy work focuses on children’s and women’s rights and grassroots civic engagement among Hindu Americans while working in the pharmaceutical industry for more than 25 years.
