Indian students applying to Canadian colleges are facing a high rate of rejections in recent times. Once a preferred spot for higher education, the dream of studying in Canada has been met with barred doors for most of the applicants.
In August 2025, Canada rejected 74 percent of Indian student permit applications. This rejection rate marks a significant uptick from the August 2023 rejection rate of 32 percent, as per immigration data obtained by Reuters.
In addition to the increased rejection rate, the data also suggests that the number of applicants from India has also dropped significantly. The number of applicants went from 20,900 in August 2023 to 4,515 in August 2025.
In 2023, Indians formed more than a quarter of International applicants to Canadian higher education.
In early 2025, Canada had reduced international student permits for the second consecutive year to curb student visa fraud.
In 2023, Canadian authorities identified nearly 1,550 fraudulent study permit applications tied to fake acceptance letters, predominantly from India, according to the immigration department.
In 2024, its enhanced verification system flagged over 14,000 potentially fraudulent acceptance letters across all applicants.
Canada has implemented enhanced verification for international students and has increased its financial requirements for applicants, an immigration department spokesperson told Reuters.
