The Atlanta Police Department (APD), have named a person of interest, captured on surveillance video, who they believe was waiting for the student to arrive before opening fire.
Authorities responded to a call, after a resident reported hearing a loud noise and discovering Banerjee lying unresponsive outside their door. He was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries late on May 20.
At a press conference on May 21, Atlanta police said the shooter appeared to have been waiting for Banerjee and confronted him in the hallway, where an argument took place before the shooting. Investigators believe the incident was not random and that the suspect and the victim knew each other.
APD Homicide Commander Lt. Andrew Smith said that police are continuing to examine digital evidence to determine the nature of that relationship, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.
Smith also noted that Banerjee had a criminal history, though he declined to provide further details. As of May 22, no arrests have been made. A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
Georgia Tech issued a statement expressing sorrow over Banerjee’s death, calling it a loss felt across the campus community. The university extended condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones, and thanked medical personnel for their efforts.
