In commemoration of India's 79th Independence Day, the National India Hub and the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago jointly organized a program at Daley Plaza on August 16.
The event was attended by over 120 individuals, including community leaders, elected officials, and members of the Indian diaspora.
Somnath Ghosh, Consul General of India in Chicago, Bharat Barai, FIA trustee-director, Alderwoman Debra Silverstein, Maria Pappas, Cook County Treasurer, Sahab Singh, former MLA, and numerous leaders of local community organizations were among the dignitaries in attendance. Maharashtra Mandal Chicago president Nameeta Vedak, trustees, and board members were also in attendance.
Consul General Ghosh, Alderwoman Silverstein, and Treasurer Pappas addressed the gathering, while FIA trustee Rakesh Malhotra and Sahab Singh also spoke about the importance of remembering the country’s freedom struggle.
FIA president Hemant Patel, in his remarks, paid tribute to India’s freedom fighters and spoke about the sacrifices made for independence. He thanked sponsors, media partners, member organizations, volunteers, and cultural participants for contributing to the program’s success.
The program began with the American and Indian national anthems, followed by the hoisting of the Indian national flag. The celebration marked the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, known as the “Iron Man of India,” for his role in unifying the nation.
Cultural performances were included in the program, with Bharat Natyam teacher Rasika Bandekar leading her students in traditional dance. FIA executives and trustees presented certificates of appreciation to volunteers and performers.
