FIA Chicago kicks off India Independence Day celebrations
The celebrations will continue with a Triranga Car Rally, Patriotic Gala and Grand India Independence Day Parade this month.

The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago launched its two-week India Independence Day celebrations on Aug. 6 with a ceremonial hoisting of the Indian national flag in downtown Chicago.
The event featured the Indian tricolor flying alongside the U.S. flag against Chicago's skyline, symbolizing the ties between India and the United States.
FIA president Hemant Patel led the ceremony, joined by organization executives and trustees. Among those honored during the event were Consul General of India Somnath Ghosh, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, Chicago Alderwoman Debra Silverstein, retired Brig. Navin Ahuja and several community leaders.

The program included the U.S. and Indian national anthems, patriotic songs and cultural performances. Six-year-old Dhara Shukla led the Indian national anthem, while Patel performed "Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon," a patriotic song paying tribute to India's fallen soldiers.
In his address, CG Ghosh emphasized the significance of India's independence and highlighted the shared democratic values and diversity that strengthen U.S.-India relations.
Pappas praised the contributions of the Indian American community, saying Illinois has benefited from its leadership, innovation and achievements across fields including education, research and business. She also presented a proclamation to Patel recognizing the occasion.
A cultural highlight of the event was the "Five Elements Dance" by Twinkling Stars Academy, which used choreography and visual storytelling to depict Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Sky while promoting environmental stewardship and celebrating both India and the United States.
Patel said Independence Day celebrations should honor the sacrifices made to secure freedom while encouraging continued civic engagement. He also called on global leaders to address religious extremism to promote peace and security.
The ceremony marked the start of FIA Chicago's Independence Day celebrations, which will continue with a Triranga Car Rally on Aug. 15, a Patriotic Gala on Aug. 16 and the annual India Independence Day Parade on Devon Avenue on Aug. 23.
