Vatsan Raman assumes interim associate dean role at CALS
Raman said he remains deeply committed to his own research program and to mentoring the outstanding students and trainees in his laboratory while taking on this new role.

Indian American biochemistry professor Vatsan Raman has been appointed interim associate dean for research in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Interim Dean Troy Runge appointed Raman, an associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry, to the interim role of associate dean for research, responsible for research administration and compliance, including leading the staff in the CALS Research Division, a statement from the university said on Aug. 3.

Raman said he was honored to serve in the capacity.
"CALS is home to an extraordinary community of researchers working across agriculture, biotechnology, human health, sustainability, food systems, and the life sciences. I look forward to working with faculty, staff, students, and research partners to support and strengthen this vibrant research enterprise," he posted on X.
Raman said he remains deeply committed to his own research program and to mentoring the outstanding students and trainees in his laboratory while taking on this new role.

Raman is an accomplished researcher whose lab creates advanced technologies at the intersection of biochemistry, computing and engineering to understand how biological molecules and cells work and engineer them for real-world applications.
"In his time in biochemistry, Vatsan has built many collaborations with university and industry partners," said Interim Dean Runge.
"He brings personal experiences with many different funding agencies and organizations, and an interest in supporting other UW–Madison researchers. I am pleased he agreed to take on this interim leadership role."
His lab takes a use-inspired approach to basic science, combining curiosity about how biological systems work with the goal of solving meaningful societal challenges, and has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and WARF.
Raman received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington, a master's in chemical engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology and a bachelor's in engineering from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in India. Prior to joining the UW–Madison faculty, he served as a Wyss Technology Development Fellow at Harvard University.
Interim Dean Runge will announce other changes in Dean's Office roles and responsibilities later in August.
