The Department of Veterans Affairs has named Indian-American administrator Vamsee Potluri as Executive Medical Center Director of the Washington DC VA Medical Center, a key tertiary care facility in the capital region.
His appointment, effective Sept. 15, was announced by Veterans Integrated Service Network 5 (VISN 5).
Potluri, a veteran administrator with more than a decade of leadership within the VA system, will oversee operations at the Level 1A medical center, which serves 139,346 enrolled veterans.
His responsibilities include managing six community-based outpatient clinics across the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Northern Virginia, as well as a stand-alone community resource and referral center that supports unsheltered and at-risk veterans. He will also lead a workforce of more than 3,200 employees.

Robert M. Walton, VISN 5 Network Director, welcomed the appointment, citing Potluri’s breadth of expertise. “Potluri has proven his extensive knowledge and sound leadership skills as well as his commitment to serving veterans time and time again. His considerable experience in operations, strategic planning, finance, human resources, and performance improvement are valuable assets for the medical center, its staff, and most importantly, the veterans we are honored to serve,” Walton said.
Most recently, Potluri served as Executive Medical Center Director at the Wilmington VA Medical Center in Delaware, where he managed daily operations and long-term planning for veterans in Delaware and southern New Jersey.
Between 2020 and 2023, he was Associate Medical Center Director at Veteran Health Indiana, responsible for a fiscal service with an $850 million budget. Earlier, he held multiple leadership roles across VA systems in Ohio and Maryland, spanning finance, ambulatory care, and business operations.
Potluri began his academic journey at the University of Houston, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and biophysics, followed by master’s degrees in business administration and healthcare administration from the University of Houston–Clear Lake.
In his first statement as head of the DC facility, Potluri underscored his focus on collaboration and service. “Together, we will pursue new opportunities for growth and improvement, upholding our commitment to providing quality care and service excellence to those who have sacrificed so much in service to our nation,” he said.
The Washington DC VA Medical Center is one of the VA’s flagship institutions, delivering comprehensive care to veterans in the capital region.
