The University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine has appointed Indian-American neuroradiologist Achala Vagal as the new Department of Radiology chair succeeding Mary Mahoney.
A leading expert in neuroradiology and stroke imaging, Vagal has served the UC community for over two decades and is widely recognized for her clinical excellence, research contributions, and leadership.Vagal currently serves as executive vice chair and vice chair of research in the Department of Radiology.

She served as acting chair during a crucial period of transition at UC Health in 2023, where she played a key role in operational streamlining, strengthening provider networks, and improving financial oversight. In her new role, she will continue to serve as associate dean of clinical and translational science and training and co-director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Training (CCTST).
Vagal expressed her commitment to advancing clinical care, research, and education in radiology. “My vision is to cultivate an environment that attracts and retains top talent, pioneers clinical AI integration, fosters transformative research and prioritizes a supportive experience for both our patients and health care teams. I look forward to working collaboratively to achieve unparalleled excellence and ensure UC Radiology remains at the forefront of the field,” she said.
Under her leadership as vice chair of research, the department has expanded its research infrastructure and increased extramural funding, achieving national recognition among the top 25 NIH-funded radiology departments. She also leads the imaging core for NIH StrokeNet and holds key leadership positions in national radiology organizations, including ASNR and RSNA.
A committed mentor, Vagal has supported over 40 trainees and heads UC’s FRAME program to develop early-career faculty. She holds an MD from Grant Medical College in Mumbai and completed her training and further education at UC.
