The United Nations urged India and Pakistan on May 8 to exercise maximum restraint and make all efforts to de-escalate the situation.

“We encourage all efforts to deescalate the situation and encourage both India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint,” Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, told reporters at the noon briefing of the UN at its headquarters in New York.

He was responding to a question on the escalation of conflict between India and Pakistan. “The world cannot afford another conflict between India and Pakistan. And he has offered his good offices,” Haq said.

Tensions between India and Pakistan have surged in recent weeks following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 tourists, including one from Nepal. India blamed Pakistan-based terror groups for orchestrating the assault and launched precision retaliatory strikes on nine locations across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The escalation has drawn global concern, with several countries and international organisations, including the United Nations, urging both nations to exercise restraint and avoid further military confrontation.
