Haybe Nur Cabdiraxmaan, 47, of Normanton, was charged with the murder of Johal on May 8 after consultations with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), according to Derbyshire Constabulary.

According to Sky News, Cabdiraxmaan, who is originally of Somali descent, appeared via video link at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court, confirming his identity with the help of a Somali interpreter. He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Derby Crown Court on May 8.

Known locally by friends and customers as “Danny,” Johal owned and operated Hen and Chickens Bar and Grill in Shelton Lock. His death has triggered widespread mourning, with tributes pouring in for the popular restaurateur. A post by his restaurant on social media asked the public to “please be kind” as staff and family process the tragedy.

Lloyds Bank expressed sorrow over the incident, saying they were “deeply saddened” and were cooperating fully with the police investigation.

Police has described the incident as isolated and said there is no wider risk to the public. Officers continue to appeal for witnesses or anyone with relevant CCTV or mobile footage to come forward.
