Congressman Shri Thanedar welcomed the announcement that the Gordie Howe International Bridge will open on July 27, ending weeks of delays for the long-awaited U.S.-Canada crossing.

"After being completed for over a month, the Gordie Howe Bridge is finally opening," Thanedar said in a statement on July 13. "Just one week after I brought House Homeland Security leaders to Detroit to demand the bridge open, an opening date was finally announced."

Thanedar said Reps. Bennie G. Thompson and Lou Correa joined him in questioning the delay and criticizing what he described as President Donald Trump's ties to Matthew Moroun, owner of the competing Ambassador Bridge.

"Michigan workers, families, and businesses should never be denied economic opportunity because of Trump's political games," Thanedar said.

The congressman also thanked community members who advocated for the bridge's opening.

"I want to thank everyone in our community who raised their voice and helped hold the Trump administration accountable for delaying this critical project," he said.

Thanedar added that he would continue challenging the administration, citing his introduction of articles of impeachment against Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Attorney General Pam Bondi, along with legislative efforts to end qualified immunity, abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and push for the bridge's opening.

The opening date was announced after U.S. and Canadian officials resolved issues that had postponed the launch from its original June timeline. The governments reached an agreement on outstanding operational matters, allowing the bridge to begin service on July 27.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a nearly $4.7 billion infrastructure project linking Detroit, Michigan, with Windsor, Ontario. The six-lane bridge spans about 1.5 miles across the Detroit River and has the longest main span of any cable-stayed bridge in North America.

It is expected to increase capacity at one of North America's busiest commercial border crossings, supporting trade, manufacturing supply chains, and cross-border travel between the United States and Canada.
