Syracuse University appoints Tula Goenka to trustees board

She will serve a two-year term.

Syracuse University (SU) has announced the appointment of Indian-American filmmaker and activist Tula Goenka as the new faculty representative to its board of trustees for the 2025–2027 term. 

In her new role, Goenka will serve ex officio on the board’s academic affairs committee, representing faculty interests in university governance, the university said in a statement.

Goenka, a professor of television, radio and film at the Newhouse School of Public Communications, has been part of the Syracuse University community for over three decades. She first came to SU as an international graduate student in 1984 and earned her M.S. in television-radio from Newhouse in 1986. She joined the Newhouse faculty in 1996 and currently serves as graduate program director in her department.

Goenka is widely recognized for her work in human rights and public engagement. She co-founded and co-directs the Syracuse University Human Rights Film Festival and the Digital Witness Symposium. Her teaching and outreach efforts include the SU Bollywood program, which has taken over 50 students to Mumbai for immersive cultural learning.

Goenka has served on multiple university committees, including the senate agenda committee (2022–2025) and the academic affairs committee since 2017. She has been honored with several awards, including the Chancellor’s Award for Public Engagement and the 2014 Inspiration Award, in recognition of her commitment to social justice and student engagement.

The appointment was made by interim vice chancellor and provost Lois Agnew in consultation with the university senate academic affairs committee.
