California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer called for the democratization of the benefits of AI-boom, in a conversation with prominent community leader and advocate Ajay Bhutoria, in California, on May 1.
Centered around Steyer’s push for the ‘California You Can Afford’ platform, Bhutoria and Steyer discussed the state’s AI-driven future.
A prominent businessman and philanthropist, Steyer, highlighted his campaign policies on artificial intelligence, workforce development, and the state’s affordability crisis.
During the conversation, Steyer emphasized on the need to empower the workforce in the age of AI. A cornerstone of the dialogue was Steyer’s newly unveiled AI and Tech Plan, which aims to ensure the "AI boom" benefits all Californians rather than just a few billionaires.
As part of this plan, the Democrat is pushing for the creation of a ‘Golden State Sovereign Wealth Fund’. Created using taxes from AI-driven profits, the fund would finance education, training, and "cash dividends” for everyday residents.
The second step of the plan is ‘Redefined Apprenticeships’, Steyer pushed for expanding high-skill vocational training and "little tech" support to ensure students and startups can compete globally.

His AI and Tech plan will also provide for ‘Mid-Career Transition Support’. Steyer highlighted the need for targeted retraining programs for the middle-aged workforce to transition into roles that AI cannot replace, focusing on human-centric skills like creativity and compassion.
Apart from his AI centric revamps, Bhutoria and Steyer also discussed a progressive roadmap to address key challenges faced by the state, including affordability and housing through the ‘largest home-building effort’ in state history, a push for publicly funded universal health care to challenge corporate insurers, and a performance-based approach to tackling homelessness.
Talking about the conversation he had with Steyer, Ajay Bhutoria described the conversation as an ‘insightful deep-dive’ into Steyer's policies.
Bhutoria remarked, “I was particularly impressed by Tom’s vision for an AI-enabled workforce—focusing on staying competitive through high-skill development, Redefined Apprenticeships for all, and retraining the middle-aged workforce.”
He continued, “His progressive stance on education, healthcare, and addressing homelessness reflects a forward-thinking approach to our state’s most pressing challenges. I look forward to continuing these critical conversations with Secretary Xavier Becerra."
With the primary approaching, Tom Steyer has emerged as a front-runner alongside fellow Democratic gubernatorial candidate Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra. The race is increasingly defined by how California will navigate the intersection of Silicon Valley innovation and the cost-of-living crisis.
Apart from Steyer and Becerra, Republicans Riverside County sheriff Chad Bianco and Fox News contributor Steve Hilton, alongside Democrat U.S. Representative Katie Porter, are vying for the governor’s office.
