Spinner Simon Harmer took four wickets as South Africa beat India by 30 runs in the first Test to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series on Nov. 16.

Chasing 124 for victory on day three, India faltered in their chase to be bowled out for 93 in the second session at Kolkata's Eden Gardens.

India captain Shubman Gill and the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed on Nov. 16 that the opener was admitted to the ICU at Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata after a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa.

Gill was taken off the field on Day 2 of the match on Nov. 15 after appearing in pain while attempting a sweep shot off Simon Harmer. He retired hurt after three balls and was transported to the hospital for scans and monitoring. The BCCI said Gill “had a neck injury” and “will take no further part in the Test match,” adding that he remains under observation.

Gill’s sudden exit forced India to send in Rishabh Pant, marking Pant’s first appearance since the Oval Test against England. The injury comes at a difficult moment for India’s batting order and leadership structure.
