Shekar Krishnan / X (Shekar Krishnan)
Indian American New York City Council member Shekar Krishnan was named chair of the Council’s Committee on Oversight and Investigations.
Krishnan, who represents District 25 in Queens, including Elmhurst and Jackson Heights, announced the appointment in a social media post, stating, “As the prices of groceries, rent, and childcare skyrocket, New Yorkers need a fighter in the New York City Council. One who will stand up to corrupt politicians and greedy corporations.”
He said the committee would use its powers to scrutinize both private actors and city agencies. “We’ll launch investigations into bad landlords, predatory corporations, and city agencies that just aren’t doing enough to protect New Yorkers,” Krishnan said.

“And we’ll ask them the hard questions to hold them accountable and make sure they can’t cheat or screw over New Yorkers,” he added.
Krishnan also criticized recent political developments at the national and city levels, saying, “As Donald Trump and National Republicans pass tax cuts for their billionaire buddies,” and “as we watch Eric Adams in his first month out of office do a crypto rug pull on everyday New Yorkers,” the need for aggressive oversight has become more urgent.
Referring to past legislative efforts, Krishnan cited the decriminalization of street vending and the passage of what he described as the largest workforce protections for Uber and Lyft drivers in the country. “Now we’ll have the arm of the Council’s oversight powers to do more, dream bigger, and fight harder,” he said.
The Committee on Oversight and Investigations is responsible for examining the performance of city agencies and conducting probes into matters affecting city governance and public accountability.
Krishnan is the first Indian American to be elected to the New York City Council. He has served since 2022 and has previously chaired the Committee on Parks and Recreation, where he negotiated record funding for city parks and focused on expanding green space in underserved neighborhoods. His legislative record includes sponsoring bills on tenant rights, worker protections, and public space equity.
