Indian Member of Parliament Dr. Shashi Tharoor has urged the Indian diaspora to embrace active civic and political engagement during a dinner interaction hosted by Indiaspora in Washington D.C., over the President's Day weekend.

“A small dinner interaction…marked the finale of my short but hugely busy US visit,” Tharoor shared on X, reflecting on the gathering of about 30 diaspora leaders. “The exchanges with influential Indian-Americans…pointed to some of the challenges and opportunities for the Indian diaspora to help their motherland leverage its relations with the US at this turbulent time.”

The evening, at Karma Restaurant, featured discussions on geopolitics, shifting global power dynamics, and the role of the diaspora in shaping  policy and partnerships. The organizers noted that the interaction centred around the diaspora's responsibility to move beyond cultural identity and into active civic and political engagement and cross-border dialogue that meaningfully shapes policy and partnerships on both sides of the Atlantic.

Indiaspora lauded Tharoor’s contribution to the evening, stating: “His thoughtful answers on leadership, a reimagined global world order, the potential impact of AI, and more—mixed with Dr. Tharoor’s trademark wit—made for a stimulating and fun evening.”

Representing Indiaspora were Shoba Viswanathan, Executive Vice-President & Chief Community Engagement Officer, and Neha Dewan, Senior Vice-President of Operations & General Counsel, alongside Arun Subramony, Bhumika Tharoor, and Ishaan Tharoor, who helped organize the event.

Tharoor’s visit underscores the growing recognition of the Indian diaspora’s strategic role in strengthening Indo-U.S. relations, particularly during a period of global uncertainty.
