Pravasi Bharatiya Divas or NRI day is annually celebrated on Jan. 9, honoring the vital contributions made to India's progress by the global Indian community, featuring celebrations at Indian embassies and missions worldwide.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said wished the global community on X and said, "Greetings on Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas. This is a day to celebrate the contributions and achievements of the Indian diaspora worldwide."
Hailing the diaspora's contributions, he added, "Their dedication towards preserving our rich heritage and strengthening global ties is commendable. They embody the spirit of India across the globe, fostering a sense of unity and diversity."

The day marks Mahatma Gandhi's return to India from South Africa in 1915, a moment kicking off a new phase of India's independence struggle, ushered in by a 'Pravasi Bharatiya' returning home.
The inaugural convention took place in 2004, initiated by the Government of India, following recommendations from the High Level Committee on the Indian Diaspora.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrates the Indian diaspora's vital economic contributions, including substantial remittances and investments that fuel India's growth and development.
It honors their role in enhancing India's global image through excellence in fields like technology, science, innovation, and leadership in host countries.
The day also recognizes cultural and philanthropic efforts, such as preserving Indian heritage abroad, supporting community welfare, and promoting India's soft power worldwide.
2026's celebration, however, will not feature the flagship Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention. The convention is held biennially in odd-numbered years and will be next organized in 2027.
