The University of Otago in New Zealand has awarded its first International Academic Excellence Scholarships to high-performing overseas students beginning undergraduate studies in 2025. The recipients, officially recognized at a ceremony last week at the Staff Club in Dunedin, include students of Indian origin alongside peers from countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, China, and the United States.
The scholarship is valued at approximately NZ $35,000 (US $21,044.29) and is aimed at offshore international students who have demonstrated strong academic performance in their home-country school systems.
Ben Rickerby, Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships Manager, said the selection process considered more than just grades. “As well as academic success, we also looked at attributes such as leadership potential and community engagement,” he said. “These students displayed a wide range of involvement and abilities, from helping those in need in their communities with involvement in support and action groups, through to success in sporting and cultural pursuits.”
Many of the students had also previously been awarded either the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship for International Students or the Global Scholarship, bringing their total tuition support to over NZ $44,000 (US $26,452.82) in some cases.
Megan Smith, International Marketing and Recruitment Manager, said the scholarship was part of the university’s effort to support academic talent from overseas. “We are pleased to be able to recognise the hard work and ambition of these students through the introduction of this International Academic Excellence Scholarship,” she said.
Smith added that the scholarship reflects Otago’s academic reputation and programme range. “As one of the world’s top 200 universities, academically talented students are attracted to the University of Otago and our diverse range of programmes across business, health sciences, humanities and natural sciences,” she said.
Commenting on the recognition ceremony, she said it was an important milestone. “It was a wonderful event for these students to celebrate their achievements as they embark on their first year of Bachelor studies,” she said. “As the first recipients of this new scholarship, this event was yet another first for the University of Otago – New Zealand’s first university.”
