India now has the world’s largest emigrant population, with 18.5 million Indians living abroad as of 2024, according to a 2025 report by Data for India. This is roughly 6 percent of all international migrants. The report uses United Nations data compiled from destination countries, since India does not maintain an official emigrant registry.

It adds that Indians are now “the largest migrant group in Canada, and the second-largest immigrant group in the USA after Mexicans”.
