Indian American statistician Murali Haran has been named the editor-in-chief of the 'Journal of Agricultural, Biological, and Environmental Statistics' (JABES) for a three-year term beginning in 2026.
The journal, published by the American Statistical Association and the International Biometric Society, focuses on methodological developments addressing scientific challenges across the agricultural, biological, and environmental sciences.

A faculty member at Pennsylvania State University (PSU), Haran said the role comes at an important moment for the fields covered by the journal. “Biology, agriculture, and the environmental sciences are being reshaped by statistical, machine learning, and AI methods, as well as new kinds of data available to researchers. It will be exciting to see the questions and ideas that emerge in the coming years,” he said.
Haran’s research spans environmental science, infectious-disease modeling, statistical computing, and spatial-data analysis. His interdisciplinary projects at Penn State have included work on Antarctic Ice Sheet modeling with geoscientists and the study of disease transmission with the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics.
His work in environmetrics earned him the 2015 El-Shaarawi Young Researchers Award, and his publications appear in both scientific and methodological journals.
Haran joined Penn State in 2004 and served as head of the Department of Statistics from 2018 to 2024. He previously chaired the American Statistical Association’s Section on Risk Analysis and served as treasurer of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis. His climate-related contributions include work with SCRiM, STATMOS, and advisory committees focused on climate-policy research.
He has held editorial roles at several journals, including co-editor of 'Bayesian Analysis' and associate editor positions at 'Technometrics,' 'The American Statistician,' and 'Biometrics.'
Haran holds a PhD and master’s degree in statistics from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.
