McGill University has announced the launch of a new Centre of Excellence in AI Education and Research in India, marking a significant step in expanding its global presence and academic reach, while strengthening its international partnerships.

This announcement was made as part of an academic mission to India, led by Universities Canada and attended by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand.

The centre is set to be established in May 2027 and will welcome its first cohort in the fall of 2027, starting with 50 students, with the number expected to increase to about 200 students over time.

The centre will offer a master’s program that combines strong academic foundations with applied learning and industry engagement.

Students will work on projects linked with real technological challenges and emerging needs in the AI sector.

The establishment comes amid India’s expanding digital economy, while the demand for skilled AI professionals surges globally.

Speaking about this new initiative, McGill’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Deep Saini, told the university,

“This initiative supports McGill’s long-term objective to deepen its presence in India. It expands McGill’s ability to deliver high-quality education and research internationally and reflects our commitment to building purposeful global collaborations.”

The initiative follows a decade of engagement with Shyam S Bhartia, founder and chairman, Jubilant Bhartia Group, and Hari S Bhartia, founder and co-chairman of the Jubilant Bhartia Group and a member of the McGill President’s International Advisory Board.

The Jubilant Bhartia Group will provide the land, facilities, and operational capacity needed to establish and sustain the centre, along with connections to companies across India’s expanding AI and technology sectors.

This industry-integrated approach is expected to keep the program aligned with evolving market needs while increasing the international visibility of Canadian higher education.

McGill’s Faculty of Engineering will design the curriculum, define academic standards, oversee quality assurance, and shape research directions, while the Indian partner will engage stakeholders locally.
