Jayapal slams GOP for using immigrants as distraction

Her remarks drew immediate criticism from conservative users, who challenged her claims about rising prices and argued that her rhetoric was needlessly inflammatory.

Indian American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal accused the Trump administration and the Republicans of using immigrants to divert public attention from the everyday realities affecting Americans.

In a post on X, Jayapal wrote, “As grocery costs, energy prices, and health care premiums skyrocket, Trump and Republicans are protecting pedophiles, building a fancy ballroom, and refusing to extend ACA tax credits. So, of course, they are trying to distract you by blaming immigrants. Don’t buy it.”

“The most often used tool in the Republican playbook is to blame immigrants,” she said in the video statement accompanying the post. She cited a pattern of referencing a crime, attributing blame to an immigrant, potentially rendering individuals deportable or inadmissible absent a conviction, denying due process, and subsequently repeating this cycle.

“The majority has been trying to distract us from the fact that the grocery and utility prices are rising across the country, from the fact that this administration has been protecting pedophiles, building gilded ballrooms, and sending tens of billions of dollars to bail out Argentina while refusing to extend the ‘Affordable Care Act’ tax for 22 million Americans,” she added.

Her remarks follow a series of reported incidents in which immigrants alleged harassment and mistreatment by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials—claims documented in recent investigations detailing abuses ranging from unsafe detention conditions to coercive practices.

Jayapal, a longtime advocate for ACA expansion and immigrant protections, has frequently clashed with Republican leadership over immigration enforcement, detention standards, and the Trump administration’s broader approach to border policy.
