Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, along with over 25 other of her partisan colleagues conveyed findings of their Shadow Hearing and appealed to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem and Attorney General Pam Bondi to end ICE operation in Minnesota.

The letter, dated Jan. 29, came as an effort to outline and convey the key findings of the Jan. 16 field hearing in Minnesota. The hearing was organized following two ICE shootings in Minneapolis within a single week, including the fatal shooting of Renee Good, incidents that triggered national outrage and widespread protests.

“At our hearing, we heard from incredibly powerful witnesses — members of the community who are standing up for their neighbors, and even those who have been detained and had their rights violated for no reason,” wrote the Members.

They added, “Throughout the hearing, it became clear to all of us that the increase in DHS personnel is making the Twin Cities less safe. Unfortunately, it appears the President and your Department are deliberately escalating tensions in Minnesota with a pattern of reckless, unlawful, and inhumane conduct against the people living in the Twin Cities.”

The members outlined statements made by local elected officials, including Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and Saint Paul Mayor Kaohly Her, apart from statements by Congress members who attended the hearing. The letter also spotlighted testimonies from
victims of alleged ICE brutality.

The lawmakers demanded, "We demand you put an end to these lawless actions by your agencies and remove this surge of ICE and CBP from the Twin Cities. The people of Minnesota deserve better."
