Indian professor wins top design award in the UK

Prof. A Balasubramaniam is the first Indian to have won the prestigious Hills Millennium Award 2025.

Prof. A Balasubramaniam, a renowned Indian product designer, won the prestigious Hills Millennium Award 2025, presented by the UK-based Institute of Engineering Designers (IED).

Balasubramaniam is the first Indian to win the annual recognition that is awarded to an international designer who has made significant contributions in the fields of product design and/or engineering design.

The Founding Director of the Institute of Design of JK Lakshmipat University, Prof. Balasubramaniam was selected for the award in recognition of his lasting contributions to the field of product design. He will be felicitated on July 12 in Birmingham, UK.

Possessing vast industry experience from designing for major companies like Eveready, Eicher, Usha, Hero Motors, Bajaj, and intergovernmental organisations such as UNDP, he was also a consultant to the National Innovation Foundation and NIIT.

In 2024, he founded IILM School of Design, in Gurgaon, the first private institution teaching Product Design and allied disciplines in North India.

An alumnus of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, he is a former National President of Association of Designers of India.

Before joining the Institute of Design at JKLU, he was the Dean of IILM School of Design and has also been a member of the Academic Board for several design institutes, including the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi and Nirma University.

Commenting on his achievement, Prof. Balasubramaniam said in a post on LinkedIn, "It's never too late for awards that celebrate one's contribution to the profession."

Grateful for the support he has received over the years, he further added, "Thanks to every person who helped me reach here. People who took me on projects, read my blogposts, followed my career graph, heard me speak, learning under me and working with me, friends who cheered from the sidelines, close friends who cared enough to criticise, a huge thanks is in order to each and everyone of you."

Past winners of the Hills Millennium Award include the legendary automotive designer Frank Stephenson, the designer behind some of the world’s most iconic cars, including the 2001 MINI Cooper, Ferrari F430, and McLaren Group P1, among others. 

Other awardees include Dorian Marjanovic, Professor Emeritus at the University of Zagreb, veteran engineering design professional Crispin Hales, and Marcus Engman, Creative Director at IKEA Retail.
