According to the Metropolitan Police, Singh attempted to rape a woman in her 20s in Southall Park, Ealing, during the early hours of Oct.13, 2024. He had been sitting on a bench in the park, waiting for a potential victim to pass by.
Armed with an imitation firearm he had ordered and assembled, Singh threatened the woman during the assault. The woman escaped and encountered two off-duty police officers near the park gates, who took her to the nearest police station.
Police launched an immediate investigation, combing through hours of CCTV footage and gathering forensic evidence. Just ten days later, on Oct. 23, a child was raped at Hayes End Park in Hillingdon. Officers linked the two incidents and intensified efforts to locate the suspect.
Singh was identified and traced to within a few doors of his home, where officers had conducted increased patrols and distributed appeal leaflets. He was arrested on Oct. 27.
Singh had earlier pleaded guilty to the rape of a girl under the age of 13, assault, and possession of an imitation firearm. He was convicted of the attempted rape of the woman and a second count of possession of an imitation firearm following a four-day trial in May.
Acting Chief Superintendent Sean Lynch, who leads policing in the Metropolitan Police’s West Area, commended the victims for their courage.
“I would like to commend the strength of the victim-survivors and their families and thank them for their unwavering bravery in reporting these awful incidents to us,” Lynch said in a statement. “Today’s conviction is testament to the officers’ thorough investigation, which has identified a violent sexual offender and undoubtedly prevented further harm.”
.Navroop Singh remains in custody and will be eligible for parole only after serving at least 14 years of his life sentence.
