An Indian-origin man was brutally killed in a machete attack at a Dallas motel on Sept. 10, police said.

The victim, identified as 50-year-old Chandra Mouli Nagamallaiah, was staying at the Downtown Suites motel in Old East Dallas. Investigators said he was attacked after a verbal dispute with 37-year-old Yordanis Cobos-Martinez, a motel worker.

According to local media reports, witnesses told police the altercation began when Nagamallaiah advised Cobos-Martinez not to use a broken washing machine. The suspect allegedly became agitated after Nagamallaiah spoke through another employee to translate rather than addressing him directly.

Cobos-Martinez exited the room, retrieved a machete, and began striking Nagamallaiah in full view of his wife and son, who attempted to intervene unsuccessfully. During the assault, Nagamallaiah was decapitated.

Subsequently, the suspect reportedly searched his pockets, stole his phone and key card, and kicked his head into the parking lot, carrying it to a dumpster, and then leaving it there.

Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel found Cobos-Martinez, still carrying the machete and covered in blood, until police arrived and took him into custody. At Dallas Police headquarters, he confessed to using the machete to kill Nagamallaiah, and his account was corroborated by surveillance video.

Cobos-Martinez has been charged with capital murder and is being held without bond at the Dallas County Jail. He is also under an immigration detainer. The investigation remains ongoing.
