Indian American journalist Rohit Vyas received two nominations at the 2025 New York Emmy Awards for his documentary on the transformation of Oak Tree Road in New Jersey.
The film, Destination Oak Tree Road, directed and narrated by Vyas, a veteran broadcaster known for decades of coverage on the South Asian diaspora, has been nominated in the Documentary Historical and Performer/Narrator categories, the New York chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NY NATAS) announced.

The documentary examines the rise of Oak Tree Road, a 1.5-mile stretch spanning Edison and Iselin in Woodbridge Township, from economic decline to its emergence as a cultural and commercial hub.
It features interviews with longtime residents, community leaders, and local officials, documenting challenges such as racial harassment, as well as the Indian American community’s resilience in building one of the nation’s most prominent South Asian marketplaces.
Reacting to the nominations, Vyas said he was honored that the team’s work was recognized. “Having spent decades as a broadcast journalist covering the Indian and South Asian diaspora communities, this first documentary project is particularly special. It is profoundly gratifying to see that the collective effort has made an impact,” he said.
He added that the Asian Indian community in New Jersey is one of the largest in the country and that the film aims to portray its history and achievements as “a quintessentially American story.”
Alongside Vyas, producers Janice Selinger, a 14-time Emmy winner, Aditi Vyas, an actress and sports host, and Isha Vyas, an arts advocate, are also nominated. Joe Lee, former NJPBS vice president and general manager, is credited as executive in charge of production, with Steve Stone serving as director of photography.
The film, co-produced by Vyas Productions and NJ PBS/The WNET Group, first aired on NJPBS and is currently available on PBS streaming platforms.
The 68th Annual New York Emmy Awards will be held in New York City on Oct. 11, where winners will be announced.
