The Consulate General of India in Seattle, in partnership with the Gates Foundation, hosted an India Day celebration at the Gates Foundation on Oct. 2 to mark Gandhi Jayanti. The event highlighted Indian culture, arts, and cuisine, and was attended by Bill Gates, Chair and Board Member of the Gates Foundation, along with senior officials from Washington State and the City of Seattle.
Addressing the gathering, Gates said, “It's fitting that we're coming together on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. The ideals he championed, the equality and dignity of every person, are foundational to the work we do.”
He added, “Today, India stands as a global leader in innovation and is pioneering solutions with the potential to save and improve millions of lives across the Global South. We look forward to continuing to partner with India on its journey toward Viksit Bharat 2047.”
The program also featured an address by Jonathan Granoff, President of the Global Security Institute, on the “Relevance of Gandhian Values in Contemporary World Order.” The event coincided with Gandhi Jayanti and the International Day of Non-Violence, which were observed across the Greater Seattle area.
Earlier in the day, a commemorative event was held near the Statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Bellevue Public Library. Bellevue City Council members joined the ceremony to honor Gandhi’s legacy. Another tribute followed at the Seattle Center, near the Space Needle, where Washington State Senator Vandana Slatter and Eddie Rye, Chairman and Founder of the Martin Luther King–Gandhi Foundation, offered floral tributes at the bust of Gandhi.
The Seattle and Bellevue commemorations also included a large turnout from the Indian-American community. Young school children performed renditions of Gandhi’s favorite hymns as part of the program.
