The urgency is because the session of the legislature has only 11 days remaining.

Hindu American Foundation is pushing for support for a bill that makes Diwali a state holiday.

The bill, introduced in the Delaware State legislature, seeks to make the fifteenth day of the Hindu lunisolar month of Kartik an official state holiday, to be known as Diwali Day.

However, the State legislature’s session ends in 11 days.

HAF in a statement appealed, “In order to make sure HB 219 gets passed this year, we need  you to contact your Delaware State Legislators now to urge them to co-sponsor HB 219.”

HAF hopes that the bill would help create a greater sense of understanding the religious and historical significance of Diwali to Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs.

Recently, a similar bill was passed in Connecticut.
