Gov. Newsom appoints Vasudha Talla to California Civil Rights Council

The Oakland-based attorney has more than 15 years of experience in civil rights litigation.

California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Vasudha Talla, an Oakland-based civil rights attorney, to the state’s Civil Rights Council, his office announced.

Talla is currently a partner at Emery, Celli, Brinkerhoff, Abady, Ward & Maazel LLP, a position she has held since 2022.

With more than 15 years of experience in civil rights litigation, Talla has overseen cases involving immigrants’ rights, prison and jail conditions, police practices, First Amendment issues, and employment and housing discrimination.

Before joining the law firm,Talla held several senior roles at the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California between 2017 and 2022, including as director of the Immigrants’ Rights Team.

She was also executive agency counsel and a legal and policy analyst at the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board from 2015 to 2016, where she worked on oversight of policing and authored a major report on unlawful home entries and searches.

Outside her law practice, Talla is a member of the board of the ACLU Foundation of Northern California and the South Asian Bar Association of Northern California.

She holds a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School and a bachelor of arts degree in English and American literature from New York University.

The appointment requires confirmation by the California State Senate and carries a compensation of $100 per day. Talla is a Democrat.
