Google Cloud has appointed Indian-American technology leader Karthik Narain as its first chief product and business officer.

The move, announced Oct. 21 by Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian and endorsed by Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, is aimed at accelerating enterprise adoption of AI and cloud technologies.

In his new role, Narain will lead product and engineering teams across cloud infrastructure, developer tools, data analytics, and applied AI. He will also oversee go-to-market operations and collaborate with Google Public Sector to drive enterprise and government transformation.

“Karthik’s proven track record with clients, along with his unparalleled depth of experience in developing enterprise technology solutions, will accelerate our customers’ journey into the AI era,” Kurian said in a LinkedIn post. Pichai described him as a “mission-centric technology leader” positioned to scale Google’s AI-driven initiatives.

Narain, who has more than 25 years of experience in technology consulting, served as the global chief technology officer at Accenture. During his decade-long tenure, he led the Cloud First and Data & AI initiatives, generating more than $2 billion in client value through enterprise AI deployments.

He also served on the board of Avanade, Accenture’s joint venture with Microsoft, strengthening his expertise in hybrid cloud ecosystems. Prior to Accenture, Narain held leadership roles at Wipro, scaling its global cloud business.

Reacting to the appointment, Narain said in a LinkedIn post, “This is an unparalleled chance to combine my expertise in engineering and product strategy with Google’s world-class foundational technologies and cutting-edge AI innovation to drive profound digital transformation.”

A graduate of Bharathidasan University with a degree in engineering, he describes himself as a “lifelong learner” focused on mission-driven innovation.

His appointment highlights Google Cloud’s push to close the gap with competitors in AI-led enterprise solutions, following the company’s $10.3 billion in quarterly revenue earlier this year.

The strategic addition comes as Google Cloud ramps up investments in AI models such as Gemini and platforms like Vertex AI, targeting a greater share of the $500 billion global cloud market. Analysts view Narain’s combined expertise in consulting and product strategy as critical to aligning Google’s technological innovation with enterprise needs.
