Mira Nair, the acclaimed Indian-American filmmaker and mother of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, was named in the Jan. 30 set of  newly released documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, published by the U.S. Justice Department.

Nair’s name appears in a 2009 email that surfaced in the files. Dated Oct. 21, 2009, the message was sent by publicist Peggy Siegal to Epstein after she left an afterparty hosted at the Manhattan townhouse of his associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

“Just left Ghislaine’s townhouse … after party for film. Bill Clinton and Jeff Bezos were there … Jean Pigozzi, director Mira Nair … etc,” the email reads.

The gathering is said to be in honor of Nair’s film Amelia. Siegal in her mail also commented on the reception of the film, describing it as “tepid,” and referring to other promotional events.

The records were made public on Jan. 30 as part of a large federal disclosure of material linked to Epstein’s case. Officials said the release spans more than three million pages, along with thousands of videos and images reviewed before publication.

Justice Department officials have stated that names appearing in the files indicate correspondence or social contact and do not, by themselves, suggest wrongdoing.

Nair is known for films including Monsoon Wedding, Salaam Bombay! and The Namesake. She is the second prominent Indian American to be referenced in the files after Deepak Chopra, the author and alternative medicine advocate, whose name also appeared in the Justice Department records in connection with past correspondence.
