A couple of newly elected Members of the House of Commons of East Indian descent must be sweating to join Prime Minister Mark Carney's new Cabinet at its official swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall on May 13.

A record number of 25 candidates belonging to the Indian Diaspora were declared successful in the Apr.28 polls. Fourteen of these successful candidates are part of the Liberal Party headed by Prime Minister Mark Carney, while the remaining 11, including Param Gill, were initially declared successful on the Conservatives, the main Opposition Party, ticket. Param Gill is awaiting the verdict of the judicial count as the “validation” process of counting of votes had changed his status from a winning candidate to a loser candidate by 29 votes.

Though three senior members of the Liberal Party, who were part of the Cabinet of the previous Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, did not contest the Apr.28 election, Kamal Khera, who was also a part of the Cabinet, was defeated in the just-concluded election.

In the last Justin Trudeau government, Anita Anand, Harjit Singh Sajjan, Arif Virani, Kamal Khera, and Ruby Sahota remained Cabinet Ministers holding different portfolios at different times. Only two of them – Anita Anand and Ruby Sahota – have returned as Harjit Singh Sajjan and Ariuf Virani decided not to seek re-election, and Kamal Khera lost.

While Anita Anand, who changed her earlier decision of skipping the Apr.28 polls and contested successfully, is all set to get an important position in the new Liberal government, who else from the East Indian community gets the nod of Mark Carney will be known early tomorrow morning.

Those elected on the Liberal ticket include Sukh Dhaliwal, Randeep Singh Serai, Ruby Sahota, Anita Anand, Anju Dhillon, Sonia Sidhu, Maninder Sidhu, Parm Bains, Bardish Chagger, Gary Anandasangaree, Iqwinder Singh Gaheer, Juanita Nathan, Amandeep Sodhi, and Gurbux Saini.

Of them, Sukh Dhaliwal, Bardish Chagger, Sonia Sidhu, Randeep Singh Serai, Anita Anand, Ruby Sahota, Anju Dhillon, Maninder Sidhu, and Iqwinder Singh Gaheer are old Parliamentarians, while Amandeep Sodhi is the youngest and a fresh face in the House of Commons. Also, first timers are Gurbux Saini and Juanita Nathan.

How Mark Carney constitutes his team will also be important, viz, the relations Canada wants to have with India. In the recent past, there were strong discordances between the two nations over several issues, including the contagious foreign interference and India’s long-standing allegation of Canadian soil being used for anti-India activities.

Canada and India have a strong people-to-people relationship spanning over a century. The eyes of the East Indian community are now all set on Mark Carney on the representation he gives to the community in his new Cabinet on May 13. This representation will be indicative of the shape the bilateral relations are going to take in the coming days.
