New York based Outro Health has announced the appointment of Dr. Uma Naidoo — a Harvard-trained psychiatrist, nutritionist, professional chef, and best-selling author — as its new Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine Advisor.
The partnership strengthens Outro’s mission to provide science-backed, non-drug approaches for individuals seeking to safely reduce or discontinue antidepressant use.
Co-founded by Dr. Mark Horowitz, a global leader in the science of deprescribing psychiatric medications, Outro Health operates the only clinically tested platform in the U.S. designed to support people tapering off antidepressants.
Dr. Naidoo, a well known name in the emerging fields of Nutritional and Culinary Psychiatry, brings evidence-based expertise on how diet and lifestyle can influence mental health. Her research and best-selling books focus on “food as medicine for the mind,” offering strategies to heal the brain through integrative and nutritional approaches.
“Outro is pioneering a new and important pillar of psychiatry,” said Dr. Naidoo. “Our medical system has plenty of strategies for putting patients on antidepressants with no credible or consistent strategies for taking them off. Food, which truly is medicine for the mind, can support this process. I am ecstatic to combine my expertise with that of Dr. Horowitz and the Outro team to support individuals in finding integrative options for long-term wellbeing.”
Dr. Naidoo’s clinical perspective complements that of Outro co-founder Dr. Horowitz, co-author of 'The Maudsley Deprescribing Guidelines'—the only clinical manual dedicated to safely discontinuing psychiatric medications. His peer-reviewed research has informed deprescribing guidelines worldwide and forms the foundation of Outro’s care model.
“It is an honor to welcome such an esteemed thought leader and health expert as Dr. Naidoo to Outro’s advisory circle,” said Brandon Goode, co-founder and CEO of Outro. “Her expertise will and already is supporting our patients with the tools they need to reduce their dependence on medication and explore sustainable non-drug options for their mental wellbeing.”
In her role, Dr. Naidoo will contribute to clinician training, including the integration of her MGH Nutritional Psychiatry Primer, and will support Outro’s national education campaigns around non-drug mental health interventions.
